For more information, visit The role Avanos Medical is seeking a highly motivated and experienced R&D Engineer to fulfill a technical role on an emerging R&D team responsible for building a new growth platform of Intelligent Enteral Feeding Technologies and focused on improving clinical and hospital outcomes. The Principal Embedded Software Engineer will play a key technical leadership role in the development of new medical devices, working cross functionally to define software system architecture and ensuring that stakeholders are aligned, and needs are met. The preferred candidate should possess strong technical traits, a deep technical knowledge of scientific principles, and a passion to contribute as a hands-on developer within a growing team. Overview This Principal Embedded Software Engineer position will act as a technical expert on a multi-year program to combine new, digital health technologies with a product line that has a proven, clinical track record of changing the standard of care for Digestive Health needs within the acute care setting. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Work with the Program leader, external partners, and cross-functional teams to design innovative medical device products. Translate customer and marketing requirements into product and software specifications which can be successfully verified, validated and launched. Work to define and create collateral for new connected device platforms; (SW/FW concepts study, Software Architecture) Broad experience in embedded system development including FPGA and/or microcontroller based designs. Design product solutions – detailed software design, initial board bring up and test, including driver bring up Oversee unit testing and implement automated testing where appropriate. Strong technical understanding of software, firmware and hardware interaction up to the OS level including RTOS. Develop software/firmware/system module specifications Generate test protocols and reports Plan resources and provide schedule estimates Master C/C++ and scripting languages like Python with Object oriented design Familiarity of requirement management tools such as JAMA, agile development tools such as Azure DevOps or JIRA Apply version control best practices using tools like Git, SVN Hands on experience with standard lab equipment such as oscilloscope, logic analyzer, JTAG and hardware debugging platforms Knowledge of hardware interfaces I2C, SPI, USB, UART, Ethernet. Knowledge of device peripherals such as EEPROMS, high speed ADC/DAC Establish guidelines for and participate in the review of product engineering artifacts (e.g., specifications, code & design development, test descriptions, implementations, tests, records, reports, etc.) Under minimal direction, update specifications, designs, test descriptions, hazard analysis, test procedures, and related documentation supporting hardware system development to known standards; Mentor less senior team members and peer review product artifacts including requirement specifications, design specifications, code, etc. Establish and maintain working knowledge of technology trends and how they are or can be made relevant to our business. Partner with external vendors to access future technology roadmaps Develop a close working relationship with colleagues in the sales and marketing organizations to understand the market space and to translate that knowledge to product requirements. Spend time in the field with physicians and key opinion leaders to develop and maintain close ties with on-the-ground happenings in our market. Develop and maintain strong working relationships with partners in the Quality and Operations organizations to work to ensure smooth and timely product introductions. Deep working knowledge of 62304, 60601, 13485 development processes and standards Passion for new product development, willingness to learn new technologies Your qualifications 5-7 years of experience in embedded software development; Medical Device development preferred. Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or similar field; Masters preferred. Flexibility to work in an Agile development model. Detail-oriented with strong organizational, problem solving, and communication skills (both written and oral). Ability to be a technical leader preferred.
