As an Industrial Engineer under the direction of the Assistant Plant Manager, this position will proactively participate in manufacturing management, especially Business Process Management, and provide technical support to the manufacturing business units and related operations. This position will also analyze manufacturing process predictability, manufacturing flow, product, and raw material costs, work design systems, and packaging and labeling requirements. The successful applicant will provide integrated solutions to achieve effective utilization of materials, personnel, equipment, and financial resources. Technical accuracy, timeliness, and economic soundness of recommendations are expected.

The applicant will support the Macon safety process.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Pursues projects and solves problems of very broad and significant importance, scope, and/or complexity involving activities such as: identifying the problem, designing the approach, gathering data, arriving at conclusions, recommending action, implementing the action, following up on procedures, and administering control and reporting phases.
  • Employs mathematical optimization methods, work measurement or standard data, methods analysis, and other industrial engineering methodology to analyze or design production systems. Develops and recommends installation or improvement of methods and procedures that will result in effective production, cost reduction, and control, capacity increase, scrap reduction, and quality improvement. Develops and prepares estimates of anticipated savings. As required, follows through on details of implementation.
  • Develops and maintains a variety of labor and expense cost standards and budgets and submits to appropriate personnel for approval; detects, by means of appropriate techniques, changing conditions that affect the basis of the standards; prepares proposal and after approval, issues revisions necessary to keep standards current.
  • Conducts various phases of formal cost reduction programs, installation of special cost control procedures, and similar cost improvements. Investigates all aspects; consult with others concerned or potentially affected; develop recommendations for actions; and follow through as appropriate.
  • Undertakes and executes studies and projects related to new products or processes; product modifications, modernization of existing processes, etc.; makes appropriate studies and consultations; analyzes and evaluates findings; contributes own constructive ideas; investigates new processing equipment possibilities; evaluates economic aspects of the project; develops recommendations accordingly. On approved projects, participates in operations planning and layout, and follows through during installation.
  • Investigates and evaluates employee suggestions to determine possible cost savings and recommend appropriate action. Develops and maintains harmonious relationships with production personnel and various staff department personnel as may be required to carry out assigned duties.
  • Conducts or participates in statistical process studies to determine the extent and cause of process variation. Establishes the need for process control and identifies appropriate manual, statistical, or computer-assisted methods for control. Monitors process performance for continued adequacy.
  • Keeps abreast of the latest developments and techniques in the field of industrial engineering by attending technical meetings and reviewing trade magazines. Recommends their application when considered advantageous.
  • Develop estimated costs to manufacture special items requested by Marketing. Determine method of fabrication for special orders. Develop estimated costs and processing sheets for special production orders. Update specials program and other duties as required.

  • Well-developed computer skills including Windows, Minitab, and process modeling applications
  • Willingness to work off shift hours in support of plant initiatives
  • Team player with proven execution in all phases of projects
  • Excellent communication skills
  • 3+ years in manufacturing a plus
  • Six Sigma and/or Lean experience is desirable but not required. However, the desire to acquire these skills is a must.

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering.

Other Skills and Abilities

In order to monitor, direct and validate equipment and installations, the incumbents in this position must be able to climb ladders, and walk catwalks, etc. Other business skills required are well-developed speaking and listening skills, proficiency in writing, and ability to teach teams and transfer knowledge. The individuals selected will have demonstrated leadership skills and be motivated self-starters and quick thinkers.

About the location (Macon GA)

Our Macon Plant, one of twelve Armstrong plants in North America, employs over 400 people working on rotating shifts, 24/7, in the manufacture and shipment of acoustical ceiling tile to Armstrong’s customers. Located approximately 85 miles south of Atlanta, the Macon facility has 33 acres under one roof, or 1.5 million square feet of floor space. It is the largest ceiling tile factory in the world. The operations are complex, automated, use the latest modern management technology, and manufacture a wide range of commercial and residential ceiling products.
