Agriculture Inspector 1 – Livestock & Poultry (Atlanta)

The vision of the GDA is to continue to be a globally recognized leader in agricultural excellence through a commitment to safety, quality, growth and innovation.DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:This position is assigned to the following counties:* HartField inspectors handle many issues involving Poultry & Livestock on a daily basis. Whether at a public sale, market or show, enforcement of health regulations and laws pertaining to state requirements, keep Georgians and animals healthy. Livestock & Poultry enforces and regulates the statutes the public sale of livestock and poultry, livestock and poultry mortality disposal, livestock disease control, and livestock auction markets and sales. Inspectors working in this area inspect poultry pits and issue site approvals. Further, inspectors certify Animal Feeding Operators, Nutrient Management Planners, and license and inspect deer farms. They review nutrient management plans and enforce health requirements for livestock shows, fairs, etc. among other duties.This position performs duties such as inspecting and testing livestock at auction markets, shows, and farms; pulling samples for laboratory testing; inspecting poultry growers for proper disposal of dead poultry; and assisting livestock owners in developing disease eradication programs. Other duties as assigned. This position requires shift work and off days will not necessarily be Saturday and Sunday.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Vocational or technical degree in agriculture, horticulture, environmental science, pest control, entomology or a closely related field from an accredited college; or high school diploma or GED and one year of experience in the area of assignment; or two years of college, which included 12 semester/20 quarter hours in chemistry or life sciences.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Preference will be given to applicants, who, in addition to meeting the Minimum Qualifications, possess knowledge, skills and abilities in the following areas:* Knowledge of animal industry and livestock;* Experience working with livestock;* Working knowledge of Windows computer operating system and applications.PLEASE NOTE: Employment is contingent upon completion of the USDA Livestock Grading certification within the first six (6) months of employment.NOTE: The Georgia Department of Agriculture conducts background checks on all final candidates.
